Ohana at Richmond Night Market

Hey everyone!

I seriously can’t believe summer is coming to an end. It’s very depressing just to think about it. BUT I’m glad the Richmond Night Market is still going to be open during the weekend until October 10th, 2016.

This year I went to the Richmond Night Market two times and BOTH times I decided to get the Salmon Poke from Ohana Poke. First time I tried it, it was amazing. People may think $8.00 for a small bowl of Poke is expensive but I really think you are paying for the quality. Night Market food was NEVER cheap anyways so for $8.00, you get this great quality bowl of poke and you can tell the people working there, such as “Cooking with Ben” treats his food like art. The way how they place their food in each bowl has a system and I love it. It’s consistent and each time I go there, I know it’s still going to be good.

The ingredients used worked perfectly together and the flavors mixed very well together. I love how the ingredients were fresh and visually it looked very appealing.

Overall I loved it and I would definitely go back again and again for this 🙂

Earnest Ice Cream

Hey everyone,

So I know Winter is here and talking about Ice cream might be out of season right now but who cares what season it is, everyone eats ice cream almost ALL the time throughout the year. My first time eating Earnest Ice Cream was at Granville Island, when I stepped foot in to Edible Canada and bought myself my very own salted caramel pint. When i had my first bite then, I already knew it was absolutely my fave ice cream ever. I’ve tried multiple places in the flavor of salted caramel, but I’ve narrowed it down and Earnest Ice Cream is still my favorite.

During the Summer, Phil & I actually visited Earnest Ice Creams store along Quebec Street. I’ve been so caught up in “stuff” that blogging about this place totally slipped out of my mind until… now ;P If you know me personally, you would know my absolutely favorite finishes/materials for interior/exteriors are brick, wood, marble. I love how this place has almost ALL of that. The whole exterior is made out of brick and I love how their signage and doors are a much more modern style and I actually really like the mixture of modern with vintage personality.

Their interior is simple, clean and is very similar to a lot of coffee shop interiors nowadays. With brick walls, wood paneling, white tiles and white counter tops. They have one staple light fixture in the seating area but majority is just minimal light fixtures because they have massive windows that allow a lot of natural light entering the space. I love how they have tall ceilings so it feels very big and open.

Since I already know I love their Salted Caramel Flavor, I decided this time around I’m going to be adventurous and try something new. (I hardly try new things when I LOVE something, so this was rather new to me) I skimmed through their chalk clipboards and one that really caught my eye was their Oatmeal Brown Sugar. I asked them for a sample spoon and I thought hmmm this tastes pretty good. Therefore I got that as my scoop (right photo), while Phil got the Whiskey Hazelnut (left photo).

After eating it for a while, I thought it was very chunky and not really enjoyable as I thought it’ll be. On the other hand, Phil thought his was AMAZING and now it has become his new favorite. He said there was a great balance between the hazelnut and whiskey flavor and was such a great combination for an ice cream flavor!

I highly recommend trying this place out if you have not yet. Earnest Ice Cream has become a popular ice cream stop within Vancouver and their unique flavors will leave you coming for more.

Food Court Corner – Sun Century Cafe

Hey Everyone,

Jess and I went to Yaohan recently to have dinner, and while walking through the food court, one particular stall caught our eye, and it was Sun Century Cafe.

This caught our eye because of the new and modern look it had. We were wondering if this was a brand new food court stall, as it visually looked much better than the other stalls. The stone look on the side walls was actually wall paper, but it gave the stall such an interesting look that caught our attention. At the time we thought it was a new stall, but looking it up later, we would find out that this was actually the same food court stall that existed here before, but with a very refreshed look.

Their menu was very enticing as all the prices included tax already and were reasonable! Their noodle soups were $5.50 and most of the rest of their menu was only $8.00 each. After browsing their menu, I decided on their Stir Fried Beef & Rice Noodle $8.00.

This was a very generous portion and looked very good. I like how it was served in an aluminum tray as opposed to a styrofoam box like almost every other food court stall would have done. This preserves the heat of the food much better than a styrofoam box would, and it definitely stayed warm for much longer than expected. Their chopsticks were one of the cleanest I’ve ever seen from a food court stall. They come packaged in a clear plastic wrap and did not need any clearing whatsoever for slivers as there were none!

The food itself was very delicious! The noodles had tons of flavour and were very soft and well cooked. The beef was very tender and perfectly flavoured. There was just the right amount of bean sprouts and onions in this to balance the dish. This was one of the best Stir Fried Beef & Rice Noodles I’ve ever had from a food court stall!

I added a Cold Lemon Tea to my order for $0.75. A hot drink would have been free with my order.

Their lemon tea was very good as well. It was a good quantity and had good flavour already without having to poke the lemons myself much.

Jess had the Beef Brisket & Rice Noodle in Soup $5.50.

I had originally thought about ordering this for myself, as it was similar to something I get from one of the Aberdeen food court stalls, which is usually a small bowl for about the same price. Considering this was going to be my dinner, I wanted something with more quantity, but Jess decided to order this and give it a try. Turns out it was quite a large bowl of noodles and beef! They gave a ton of beef brisket pieces in this bowl which gave this great value. I tried it and the beef was very flavourful, as were the noodles and soup. The flat rice noodles worked very well in this dish as opposed to the wonton noodles used in the other dish I was referring to from Aberdeen. I loved every bit of this dish and it was very tasty!

Overall both dishes turned out to be fantastic and at very reasonable prices. We both loved their food very much and would definitely come back to try more of their menu. I’m not sure if they changed their menu since refreshing their look, but it felt like Yaohan’s food court was missing a food court stall with food such as theirs. I find their food to have incredible value for the cost and quality, and for that, I give them a perfect 5/5 rating! I highly recommend this place for anyone dining at Yaohan’s food court!

Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House

Hey Everyone,

This summer I had the chance to dine at Joe Fortes with some colleagues during lunch, and we had heard they had amazing oysters so we definitely had to try some.

Straight to the food we go!

We had four types of oysters, one of which were really big! I wasn’t the one that ordered them, so I’m not too sure which ones are which, but if any of you are oyster experts and can identify them through the pictures, definitely post it in the comments below!

The big one wasn’t my favourite though, as I felt it was too big to enjoy properly, and that the flavour of it wasn’t as good as the other 3. The smaller ones were definitely a lot more tasty than the bigger one. I have only recently got into eating oysters and am now fully into oysters!

We thought their happy hour covered oysters too, but turns out it doesn’t and it wasn’t even happy hour yet (4pm – 6pm).

We had other food as well though. My main was the Today’s Grilled Duo of Fresh Fish $28.95, which was a sablefish and salmon, with Caesar Salad.

The fish were absolutely delicious! They were so tender and flavourful, it was just a shame that they were so small! If I had only ordered this without the oysters, I would still be very hungry at this point. The salad was very good as well, although it was a bit more on the salty side, but not the point where it was not enjoyable.

Since I wasn’t that full yet, I definitely had room for dessert!

Dessert Trio $16.95

Tahitian Vanilla Creme Brulee

Cheesecake

Tiramisu

These desserts were good, but not amazing. I’m not a creme brulee fan, but this was not bad. The cheesecake was not bad, but not as good as the ones from Cheesecake Etc. My favourite out of the 3 would have to be the tiramisu, as it was just better overall compared to the other 2. It was very fluffy and tasty, and was just satisfying overall.

The service at Joe Fortes is always excellent. We were recommended an excellent white wine and they were also very courteous and helpful. They were prompt with checking up on us at appropriate times and just provided a wonderful dining experience for us.

Overall, this is a restaurant I would dine at time and time again, budget permitting, as the food here is always great, the service is always excellent, and they have a great selection of wines to pair. The ambiance in the restaurant compliments the overall dining experience so well and I have a great time whenever I dine here. I highly recommend you guys check this place out if you’ve never been. Great date location too!

Smokehouse Sandwich Company

Hey Everyone,

Smokehouse is a place I have heard of before, and passed by a few times in the past, but due to their very limited opening hours, I was never able to dine there until recently.

The outside is very unassuming, as it follows the same color scheme for their awnings as the rest of the building. The inside has some very cool design though.

The lighting fixtures were all made from mason jars, and there were a lot of rustic elements to the decor.

Their menu is written on a gigantic chalk board on the wall.

Given the sunny weather outside, and the chalk writing was a bit faced and rubbed away, it was very difficult to read the entire menu clearly.

For drinks, I decided on getting the Strawberry & Mint (Cold) $2.99.

Yes they give you a mason jar with stuff in it! There is a water dispenser on the side for you to fill it with water, then shake it up to make the actual drink. The result is this:

The yellow/orange drink that my colleague got had ginger in it, and it turned out to be quite strong, so that’s why I picked strawberry. My strawberry drink was very good! It was very refreshing to drink, and who knew mint and strawberry would work so well together! The size of the drink was just big enough to finish one sandwich, but if I had more food, I would need to refill it with just water, because you don’t get a refill of the strawberry mint mix. My colleague pointed out that it tasted like strawberry jam mixed with mint in cold water. That might be how they make it, but it is very delicious. Great idea to put them in mason jars as well, as that is ever the popular cup these days.

I decided on getting the Billie $9.99.

This sandwich contained salt cured pork belly with aioli, lettuce, and salsa. Not only did it look amazing, it tasted amazing! The “I” and “II” on the menu board means single meat or double meat. I got the single meat sandwich, and this was actually a good portion of meat to balance with the rest of the sandwich. It didn’t look that way before eating it, but there was a good portion of meat inside! This sandwich was amazingly delicious! The flavours from each ingredient worked so well together, and the pork belly was so tender and juicy as the main feature of the sandwich. The bun was toasted just right to have a crispy texture but soft interior. Just writing about this sandwich makes me want to go back and have another one!

My colleague got the Wilbur $8.99.

This was a cumin spiced pulled pork sandwich with aioli and coleslaw. I had a bite of his sandwich and it was good, but I must say mine was much better =]

My other colleague ordered a side of Crisp $2, which was thin cut potatoes fried in olive oil (potato chips). These were freshly fried up, made to order, and were very good!

There wasn’t much service, as you order from the counter and grab everything yourself from the counter. When your order is ready, they call your name and you go up to get your tray of food.

Overall this restaurant was awesome! It was just as good as the hype I’ve heard made it out to be. The sandwich I had was amazing (you might say one of the best sandwiches I’ve had), the drink was interesting and refreshing, and the interior was comfortable and relaxing. I would highly recommend everyone to check out this restaurant if you haven’t, and if you have, you would definitely want to come back for more. I just wish they would extend their opening hours to past 5pm on weekdays so those of us that work 9-5 can have a chance to enjoy this for dinner!

Cafe Joie

Hey everyone!

The other day I took a break from work and school and just ventured off with an old friend searching for new places to try and did some massive saving for my wallet because I found 2 amazing jackets from the vintage store.

Cafe Joie is a super cute cafe located right across from Metrotown. Because the store location is at the corner of a hill, it is very easy to pass by and not notice its existence. I find a lot of coffee shops nowadays have the same interior vibe. The type that I really like, rustic meet modern.

This place serves waffles, panini’s, coffee buns, coffee, & tons of macarons! It wasn’t difficult for me to choose because I already saw photos on Zomato previously and I knew automatically I’ll be trying out their waffles.

First off, let’s talk about their drinks!
I got the Green Tea Latte ($4.00). I usually don’t order green tea lattes but this was beyond delicious. Definitely worth the try when you come here!

My friend got a Panini and she said it was extremely delicious! She ordered a drink on the side and it had the cutest foam design on it. It was a TEDDY BEAR … 🙂

Now, here is my Green Tea Waffle ($10.99) YUP, I ordered green tea flavoured everything from my meal to my drink. The portion was huge! The waffle was freshly made because I had to wait approx. 15 mins until it was ready. Came with fresh kiwi and strawberries. Had multiple pieces of mochi and had whipped cream on both sides with two HUGE scoops of green tea ice cream and they topped it off with a huge strawberry macaron. Oh, forgot to mention, the whole plate was drizzled with matcha. Yup…this plate was definitely heavenly.

Milltown Bar & Grill

Hey Everyone,

Recently a good friend recommended me to this restaurant so I had to bring Jess along to check it out! When I Google Mapped this place in the beginning, I was surprised to see that this restaurant was located on some sort of “island” off the southwest corner of Vancouver. If you didn’t know where this restaurant was ahead of time, it would be very difficult to find if you just drove around looking for it. I highly suggest Google Mapping this first!

As you can see on the menu, they state “Yes it’s true…you are technically sitting in Richmond! But we would prefer that you tell people we are in Marpole!” That would make this place the only part of Richmond I know of that is accessible from Vancouver without crossing a bridge.

Started off with a beer of course! The Daily Draught Beer Special was the OK Spring 1516 Bavarian Lager $4.34

Jess got the Starboard Cocktail $6.09 which was their house infused raspberry vodka with soda water and lemonade. This was a very tasty drink!

Here’s a look at how their menu looks like:

They have a free shuttle, similar to the one at Flying Beaver!

The menu had a lot of great looking options, but when we heard what the daily specials were, we had to order those!

I had the Pulled Pork Sandwich with Fries $15.00

This pulled pork sandwich was on a house-made bread, which looked a lot like naan bread. They make the bread to order and put it in the pizza oven whenever someone orders a sandwich. It was very light and fluffy, and the flavour of it by itself was amazing! I love bread, so this was heavenly for me! I’m not a fan of coleslaw, so when the coleslaw in a pulled pork sandwich impresses me, that’s rare! The two blend together so well in this sandwich and give it tons of flavour. The fries are cut just to the perfect size for me. They’re soft, yet have a slight crisp to them. They seem to be fresh cut fries, not frozen ones, which reminded me a lot like Five Guys fries. They came lightly salted and peppered already, which was awesome, and they were perfectly fine on their own without ketchup. This entire dish was just amazing! It’s just a shame this isn’t on their regular menu, as I would totally order this every time I dine here. I would have to say this is one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I’ve ever had. This tops the pulled pork sandwich from Flip Top Food Truck that came to my office building before, and THAT was an amazing pulled pork sandwich. The biggest deciding factor in this has to be that bread! I would order that bread separately if I could, and just have that with butter!

Jess had another daily special, the Yellow Tuna $21.00

I had a bite of this and it was very delicious! The tuna was very flavourful and cooked just right. The rice that came with it was very creamy and savoury! She really loved this dish.

After our entrees, we decided to get some dessert! We settled on the Silk Pie $8.00, a chocolate dessert with Frangelico butter cream, roasted almonds and coffee liqueur.

This dessert was amazing! Usually Jess isn’t really into the chocolate cakes, but she loved this one! The creamy mousse-like pie was just so delicious! It was sweet, but not too sweet to the point of overwhelmingly sweet. The base completed the pie perfectly with the oreo-like cookie and crushed almonds mixture. There was whipped cream around the outside of the pie with chocolate sauce drizzled all over the pie. There was literally nothing to dislike in this dessert. It was just amazing to the last bite!

The service was great! Our server was very prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable. She provided us with a great dining experience for our first time at this restaurant. It was very sunny out on a Friday evening, and we were seated on the patio at a table where the sun was hitting, and she went through the effort of moving a patio umbrella to block the sun for us, even though we didn’t even say anything about it in the beginning. That extra effort was very much appreciated!

Overall this place was just awesome! The food was amazing, the service was awesome, the location was very exclusive, and the restaurant itself looked very nice too! I will definite be making revisits here and I highly recommend this place to everyone! We’ll definitely be trying more of their food and we’ll be sure to blog all about it.
